The Avalanche haven’t seen Gabriel Landeskog in more than two years. They’ve known since May that they would be without Valeri Nichushkin for the first month of the regular season. Artturi Lehkonen did not fully participate in training camp and will be out for the first several weeks of the season. On Opening night, Jonathan Drouin suffered an upper-body injury and has been out since. Now in their third game, the Avalanche are also without defenseman Devon Toews (lower body).

By my count, that’s five huge pieces of the Avs, all unavailable just five days into the season.
Without Toews, the Avs are dressing Oliver Kylington against the New York Islanders. In his Avalanche debut, the 27-year-old is lining up alongside Cale Makar on the top pair and was on the ice for the opening faceoff. The second pair of Manson and Girard remained the same. On the third pairing, Colorado is healthy scratching Calvin de Haan and instead will turn to John Ludvig to play with Sam Malinski.
Ludvig is also making his Avalanche debut.
