Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 is coming soon, but after Gary King’s reputation tanked during the off-season, can he redeem himself after some alleged tremendously bad behavior? Gary has been one of the most polarizing Below Deck franchise yachties of all time, but his behavior in the upcoming season is what’s going to be scrutinized the most by viewers. Throughout the years, Gary has proven himself to be a formidable First Officer aboard Parsifal III, and it’s clear he enjoys working with Captain Glenn Shephard, but his performance isn’t the only thing Below Deck Sailing Yacht viewers focus on.
Gary’s work may be well done, but the First Officer struggles in his interpersonal relationships, especially when it comes to women. Gary’s interested in making connections, but as a self-described playboy, he’s not great at keeping them professional or ensuring they’re nurtured when things get personal. Interested in the physical more than the emotional, Gary struggles to keep himself in check throughout charter seasons, typically finding at least one of his colleagues aboard Parsifal III to pass the time with. While he’s rarely gotten into a boatmance, Gary’s often attached to the women on crew of Below Deck Sailing Yacht.
Moving into Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, Gary’s behavior has been called into question more than ever before. While he’s used to the playboy moniker and getting flack for his treatment of women, which was highly criticized during the Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 reunion, serious allegations were lodged against him during the off-season that changed the perception of Gary along with the show as a whole. Gary was accused of sexual misconduct by a Below Deck franchise makeup artist, upending his life. While Gary has denied the accusations, it’s unclear if he can clean up his reputation.
Gary King Has Returned For Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5
He’s Back Despite Viewer Pushback
While Gary’s fate on Below Deck Sailing Yacht was in question for months when viewers weren’t sure about what was going on with the show, he’ll be returning for the upcoming season of the series. Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 was a struggle for Gary, who watched as his close friends Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher and Chief Engineer Colin MacRae got into an ill-advised relationship that changed their relationship entirely. The pair were involved in a love triangle with Gary, and while Gary and Daisy’s friendship remained intact, Gary’s friendship with Colin hasn’t recovered as smoothly.
Gary’s time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 was predominantly an issue because of his lack of professionalism with Stew Mads Herrera, which was an issue throughout the season. Gary pursued Mads, and though she was interested in him, the way he spoke to her and treated her wasn’t something viewers felt they could get behind. Gary’s attitude and uncomfortable nature weren’t appropriate, and Below Deck Sailing Yacht viewers took notice. Though this has been the norm for Gary for years, it was tough to see it play out without consequences.
Judging By The Trailer, Gary Doesn't Cause Any Problems
He’s Seemingly All Business Aboard Parsifal III
Although Gary’s time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht isn’t over, many were curious if he would be returning for the upcoming season due to the accusations lodged against him. While the allegations haven’t been confirmed, and Gary himself has taken major strides to ensure that he’s said they’re false, the reputation he’s gained from the allegations isn’t great. Perception-wise, Below Deck Sailing Yacht has been doing poorly since the allegations against Gary came out, and many believed that he may not be invited back or that he would be edited out of the season.
While Gary’s reputation may have been hit hard by the sexual misconduct allegations, he seems to be on his best behavior during the Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 trailer. Gary’s mostly shown in a professional light during the trailer, working with the rest of the deck crew and struggling to keep them going. While there is a quick scene of Daisy shouting at Gary in his bunk shown during the trailer, the majority of his appearances are either work-related or of Gary laughing around with other Parsifal III crew members.
The Accusations Against Gary Likely Won’t Be Discussed
They Don’t Appear To Be Brought Up
The allegations against Gary between Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 and Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 were quite serious, but it’s likely they won’t be brought up during the season. While it’s possible that someone could confront Gary about his behavior, it’s more likely that the allegations will be ignored because of their source. As the accusations came from a Below Deck franchise makeup artist, speaking about them could be ill-advised for the show itself. Gary may not have been able to discuss things openly, either, during his time on the sailing yacht.
While Gary’s personal life is typically fodder for the show, the allegations of sexual misconduct aren’t the type of thing that he’d likely be open about. Gary’s behavior with women is usually brushed off considerably, and the issues he faced because of the sexual misconduct allegations likely won’t be made public. Unfortunately for viewers who were hoping to learn more about Gary’s reaction, hear anything about him apologizing, or see some sort of consequence for his actions, Below Deck Sailing Yacht likely won’t be covering the story.
Will Gary Act More Appropriately On Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5?
It’s Possible, But Not Entirely Likely
Though Gary was aware of what was going on during the filming of Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, it’s likely that his behavior hasn’t shifted much because of the way he’s chosen to handle it. Gary has been vocal about the fact that the allegations are false, stating time and time again that he didn’t have contact with the makeup artist and that nothing she said is true. While many are more likely to believe the alleged victim, it’s clear that he doesn’t want to even foster a possibility that she was telling the truth.
Due to his stance, Gary likely didn’t change much when it came to his behavior this season. Still true to his ways, Gary’s always been shown as a hard-working player who finds himself entangled with the women of each season. While he may not be doing quite as much as he did in the past when it comes to going out, partying, or hooking up, Gary’s behavior will likely be quite similar to what it’s been like in the past. This means his reputation, unfortunately, will likely continue to be poor after Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5.
Below Deck Sailing Yacht premieres Monday, October 7 at 9 p.m. EDT on Bravo.
