Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick admitted he bribed staffers to pat down Tom Brady's passes in practice.
Belichick and the legendary quarterback formed a dynasty that dominated football for 18 years with the Patriots. They won their first Super Bowl together in 2001 and went on to become the sport's most iconic duo with five more victories on the NFL’s grandest stage.
There is no doubt that Belichick’s coaching genius got the best out of Brady. The 72-year-old recently shed light on one tactic he used in an often-seen passing drill, which simulates defensive linemen blocking a quarterback's throws.
During Week 12's Monday Night Football broadcast on ManningCast, Peyton Manning demonstrated the drill, revealing Belichick's twist - that the coach would go one step further by making equipment personnel hold up tennis rackets to make it even harder for Brady to find passing lanes.
Belichick interjected, admitting he would offer $100 to any staffer who could bat down the seven-time Super Bowl winner’s passes. But in a hilarious twist, Brady would cheekily outbid his coach, offering them $200 not to block his throws.
"They would try to bat them down," Belichick said on ESPN. "They wouldn’t stand there like your guys did and move their rackets out of the way when you throw it.
"I'd pay them to knock Brady's passes down. The problem was, Brady would pay them more. He'd pay them $200 if he went through all of practice and didn’t knock one down. Brady’s making more than I was."
It was exactly the type of behind-the-scenes insight viewers had hoped for when ESPN revealed Belichick would be joining the Manning brothers for the first part of each ‘ManningCast’ broadcast this season.
But despite the unparalleled success Brady and Belichick enjoyed together at the Patriots, the retired quarterback explained earlier this year that a breakdown in their relationship led to his shock departure in 2020.
Speaking during an episode of the Apple TV+ docuseries 'The Dynasty', he said: "Me and Coach Belichick, we did what we loved and competed for 20 years together. But I wasn't going to sign another contract even if I wanted to play until 50. Based on how things had gone, I wasn't going to sign up for more of it.”
Instead, the QB joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a free agent, signing a $50million contract and going on to win another Super Bowl, before retiring in 2023. During that period, Belichick struggled to replicate the Patriots' past glories without his star player.
