Teresa Giudice and Joe Giudice were a staple on the Real Housewives of New Jersey for many seasons. Even though their marriage might not have been the best, the duo delivered the made-for-TV moments. Now Tre is hoping Joe will get a second chance, but here is why it probably won’t happen.
In 2009, via the New York Post, Joe and Tre filed for bankruptcy and claimed they owed creditors more than $10 million. According to legal papers filed in Newark federal court, the couple owed $104,000 in credit card debt and $85,600 in home repairs. The news surprised fans who had only ever seen the couple living a life of luxury. Fast forward to 2013, when Teresa and Joe were charged with a conspiracy to defraud lenders and illegally obtain mortgages. The Giudcies were handed down a 39-count indictment claiming that they committed mail and wire fraud, bank fraud, false statements on loan applications, and bankruptcy fraud.
In 2014, both pleaded guilty and were sentenced to time in jail. Joe was given 41 months and Tre 15 months in prison. In March 2016, Joe arrived to serve his time at Fort Dix Federal Correctional Institution in New Jersey. In 2018, a judge ruled that Joe would be deported back to his home country of Italy once released. After multiple appeals, Joe was eventually released from ICE custody and flew back to his small town. He isn’t allowed back in the United States at this time.
With inauguration day approaching, Teresa is hoping that the president and her former The Apprentice co-star will pardon her husband. While speaking out on a podcast, Tre told the host, “I would love to request a pardon. I hope, and I’ve talked to psychics that said they see Joe back in this country.” Not the psychics, Tre (insert face into palm). Joe is currently living in the Bahamas, working as a contractor. However, according to Teresa, her ex-husband isn’t making nearly enough money to survive. She added, “I hope it does happen because then he could help me with the girls. He doesn’t make the money he could make here contracting. It’s so different.”
Teresa went off on a tangent, noting she has been watching The Juror on Netflix, claiming, “I could relate to that. The system is so corrupt. There were cops and prosecutors involved in sh*t. Watch The Juror.” Teresa then quipped, “For Joe to get deported when that woman Anna who was on Dancing with the Stars is still in this country, are you kidding me!? Joe had four kids. It’s just so mind-boggling.” Joe being allowed back into the United States is a pipe dream. Trump has bigger fish to fry, and bringing Juicy Joe back isn’t one of them.
As a child, Joe immigrated to the United States from Italy and held a green card. However, Joe never went through the process of becoming a naturalized citizen of the United States. Joe never seemed bothered that he didn’t do the right thing. He once opened up to Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live saying, “I mean, my mistake was I never became a citizen. Yeah, that was stupid of me. But when you’re raised here as a kid, you go to school here, you do everything here, it’s not a big deal. Especially when you’re not a criminal. As for why he never got a U.S. passport, he noted, “I don’t know why. I just never got one when I was supposed to get one.”
And that is the crux of the problem. Joe never cared enough to make the effort to become a citizen. So why should the courts give him a second thought? While it is sad that Joe and his daughters have to live apart, he alone reaped this outcome. As much as Joe likes to say he wasn’t a criminal, his convictions would say otherwise. It also doesn’t help that this wasn’t Joe’s first run-in with the law. In 2014, Joe agreed to a plea deal to settle charges after he used his brother’s identifying documents to get a new driver’s license in 2010 after his had been suspended for a DUI.
