Vikings eye ex-Raiders starter Jack Jones in free agency shake-up: Former $4.4M cornerback could be surprise solution to Minnesota’s glaring secondary crisis - suong

The Minnesota Vikings desperately need help at cornerback. Though Byron Murphy Jr. is coming off an excellent 2024 campaign and is a high-level starter in the secondary for Minnesota, the team lacks other starting-caliber options at the position.

The Vikings are banking on Mekhi Blackmon and Isaiah Rodgers being solid starting boundary corners in 2025. However, Vikings Territory's Dustin Baker believes Minnesota should try to sign former Las Vegas Raiders and current free agent cornerback Jack Jones to bolster the corner room.

"Jack Jones is kind of a sweet and intriguing character from the Vikings’ perspective. Minnesota rather vividly had an interest in Jones. The evidence is there. If the team determines that it needs one more cornerback, he just might be the guy this summer," Baker wrote.

Jones started all 17 games for the Raiders in 2024, snagging three interceptions with 16 passes defended. Though his baseline stats look great, Jones was incredibly inconsistent in coverage, and his effort also came into question at times. He was released by Las Vegas in April, as the new regime of head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Spytek didn't see him as a long-term piece.

Though he definitely has his flaws as a player, the Vikings should look to sign Jones. The 27-year-old would compete for a starting spot in the secondary with Blackmon and Rodgers, and even if he doesn't win a starting job, Jones would be an adequate depth piece.

Additionally, the Arizona State product should be cheap to sign. A contract worth around $5 million annually should be enough to add Jones to Brian Flores' defense.

Minnesota needs all the aid they can find in the secondary. Signing Jones to a team-friendly deal to be a potential starter and rotational piece would be a savvy move by general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah.
