TheNew York Rangers have to find a way to build a team that will win now, after last season's disappointing 5th-place finish. GM Chris Drury might be able to find a way to give them a leg-up next season while acquiring top talent in return for Alexis Lafreniere. That trade partner might come in the form of the Columbus Blue Jackets, with Yegor Chinakhov attached.![]()
The New York Rangers need to retool, and that could mean moving out players who were once considered core pieces in New York.
Alexis Lafreniere could be one of those pieces, given how poorly he performed last season. He experienced a regression in production after a stellar 57-point season last year, scoring only 45 points (17-28).
With the Rangers needing to put themselves back into contention, they could look to an interdivisional rival to give Lafreniere a fresh start.
The Columbus Blue Jackets. They would be able to shoulder his $7.45 million AAV contract and be able to return significant value for the former 1st OA pick.
Heavy.com has an interesting proposal that would send Lafreniere to Columbus for a rich return in assets:
Rangers acquire:
Denton Mateychuk
Yegor Chinakhov
2026 third-round pick
Blue Jackets acquire:
Alexis Lafreniere
For New York, this would be a splash as they receive two top prospects of the Blue Jackets, and a mid-round pick in the 2026 draft.
Chinakhov and Mateychuk would add to the future potential of the Rangers, putting them back into contention much sooner than we expect.
Since Chinakhov has requested a trade, this could be a welcome move, putting him in Madison Square Garden and giving him a chance at playing in the playoffs. While Mateychuk has proven himself more than capable of playing in the NHL, scoring 13 points (4-9) in 45 games.
The Rangers would be able to give Lafreniere a fresh start as he's failed to live up to his draft selection in the NHL.
