Tom Brady isn’t expected to leave the FOX Sports broadcast booth any time soon - though some have questioned if he can simultaneously serve as a commentator and Las Vegas Raiders owner.
While speaking to Sports Business Journal’s Ben Fischer, Don Yee - Brady’s agent - shot down speculation that the former quarterback could end up leaving FOX in the near future. “Tom has had a tremendous amount of fun working with Fox this year, and he’s really excited about the future with Fox and his growth on their team,” he said. “And this year was the first year of a long relationship.”
When asked point-blank if Brady intends on serving out the entirety of his 10-year, $375 million contract with the corporation, Yee replied: “Yes.”
In recent days, Brady’s two positions as minority owner of the Raiders and lead NFL analyst for FOX Sports have butted heads. As Las Vegas continues its head coaching search following the firing of Antonio Pierce, the three-time NFL MVP has allegedly been recruiting potential candidates - though one in particular has drawn the ire of fans and pundits alike.
According to reports, Brady’s presence in Las Vegas was one of the main reasons why Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson - one of the most highly sought-after candidates in this year’s NFL coaching cycle - is considering taking the Raiders’ position. Given the fact that the 47-year-old is calling Detroit’s upcoming Divisional Round clash against the Washington Commanders, however, many have wondered why the NFL is still allowing him to work the game.
"This is a total conflict of interest," Chicago Tribune’s David Haugh argued. "If they don’t address it, it's going to be even more offensive. Ignoring the link would be disingenuous and insulting to the audience."
Others have insisted that it will be incredibly difficult for Brady to juggle his responsibilities in front of the camera and in the front office next year. "Tom Brady is running that team right now - the NFL knows it and FOX knows it and something has got to give,” ex-Miami Marlins president David Samson said during an appearance on the ‘Dan Le Batard Show.
"So enjoy Tom in the booth because you're not going to see him there next year. He will be in the Raiders front office, he will not return as an analyst for FOX - you cannot be this involved in the operation of a team and be the No 1 analyst. It's an absolute insult to analysts what he's doing. And it's an insult to team president what he's doing.
"You end up doing both of them in a mediocre way... and I promise you he will choose the Raiders," Samson contended. "Tom Brady will not be with FOX next season, he'll be full time in the Raiders front office running that team. Period."
