Sean Lowe Reveals What He Told His and Catherine Giudici's Kids After Dog Attack

Dogs will always be Sean Lowe's best friends.

"I am the biggest dog lover," the former Bachelor insisted in an exclusive interview with E! News three months after enduring two particularly vicious attacks by his family's dog Moose. "I always have been. My grandfather once said, 'A man without a dog is not a wealthy man.' And I just I love that. I think it's so true."

And he and wife Catherine Giudici felt they had struck gold when they adopted Moose into the Dallas-area home they share with Samuel, 8, Isaiah, 7, and Mia, 5.

"By all accounts, he just seemed like a great dog," noted Sean. "He was great with the kids. He was very loving." Which is why the March incident that saw the rescue ripping into the flesh on his arm in two separate attacks that left Sean covered in stitches "felt like it was straight out of horror film."

One of the most terrifying parts for the former reality star came when he had to explain their decision to rehome their furry friend.

"The kids loved Moose, he slept with them every night," acknowledged Sean. So the former Kansas State linebacker sat his brood down and said "'Moose had something wrong in his head and unfortunately these things happen. And so it's not really safe because Daddy can't trust that he's not going to act out like this again."

But despite the scary incident, his kids are still there to make other four-legged friends.

"They've handled it really well," Sean detailed. "My biggest fear is that because they witnessed part of the second time he attacked me, they would have some fear of dogs. And I'm so grateful that has not been the case. It really hasn't."

In fact, his crew will still try to steal their friends' dogs for a sec.

When Sean is outside with the kids, "I go out of my way every time one of our neighbors is walking their dog down the street: 'Hey, can we stop and pet Poppy,' or whoever the dog is," the 41-year-old explained, "just because I want to keep reinforcing, like, dogs are our friends."

Which is why he had some trepidation about telling fans what had happened.

"But because so much of our life is public, I knew that people would ask, 'Hey, where's Moose?'" Sean noted. "I just wanted to get out in front of it."

But their stories helped him find the silver lining of the situation.

"We love dogs," Sean insisted, "and we know dogs are man's best friend and are absolutely an advocate for adopting dogs. But that risk exists. And I think it would behoove parents to learn about it and teach your kids how to behave around dogs."

So would you accept this bit of advice?

He recommends reminding kids that they shouldn't pet dogs without permission or put their hands in pup's faces "because most dogs don't like that," said Sean. "Ask the owner, 'May I pet your dogs? Are they friendly? How should I pet him?' Things like that. Because that's so important."

And while he's handing out roses parenting tips, he'd like to dust off the recommendation he received as a new dad.

"This is going to sound so cliché," he said, "but really try to enjoy every chapter. From the moment you hold your child for the first time in the hospital, to that first scary car ride home, to those nights where you're just rocking the baby, to their first words, the first time they take their first steps, it's just so special."

And while he acknowledged he's in danger of becoming "one of those old guys that are telling young people, 'It happens fast—enjoy it,'" it does happen rather fast. While he knows there were nights he raced through the routine "so that I could rest," he'd tell his former self to make the most of every monotonous bath and diaper change.

"It's very difficult, but it's also a short chapter of life," Sean stressed of those early parenting years. "And when it's gone, it's gone."

So he and Catherine are holding firm to their Bachelor-era vow to create a home that's full of love and laughter. And they're not the only franchise stars to feel everything's coming up roses. Check out who else still sees forever in each other's eyes.
