Raiders Issue Surprising Giants Request in GM Search - suong

For a team that didn’t find a ton of success in 2024, the New York Giants are experiencing heavy turnover from other teams hoping to revamp their front office and coaching staff.

That has been most prominent with the New England Patriots, who have hired head coach Mike Vrabel and taken an interest in his former understudies with the Tennessee Titans. With defensive coordinator Shane Bowen joining the Giants in 2024, he brought a handful with him, and some minor staff members have now pivoted to New England.

On Thursday, it became clear that assistant general manager Brandon Brown could be the next to depart from New York’s front office.

That's a surprise to some ... but a good thought on Brown.

CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones reported that the Las Vegas Raiders requested to interview Brown for their vacant general manager spot.

Brown received interest last season and is largely viewed as a rising executive. With experience dating back to 2012 with the New York Jets, Boston College, and the Indianapolis Colts before rising up the ranks with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Brown joined Philadelphia as the assistant director of pro scouting in 2017 and rose to the level of director of player personnel in 2021. He joined Giants general manager Joe Schoen as the assistant general manager in 2022 and has impressed in his occasional media availabilities.

The Raiders are an intriguing spot for a general manager candidate. No easy path to a quarterback makes life difficult, as does three strong pairings at head coach and quarterback in the AFC West. But it seems increasingly likely that Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson takes the job as head coach.

That would likely hand Johnson extensive personnel control but earn Brown a long leash and the opportunity to collaborate with the sport’s hottest coaching candidate.

It’s possible that minority owner Tom Brady calling the shots ends up being a burden, but if he represents a change in the organization, shifting them from irrelevance to competence, Brown could find himself on a team better positioned to win than he is now.

As a valued member of the front office, Brown would be a significant hole for Schoen to fill, should he eventually depart.
