The New England Patriots know Drake Maye is their quarterback for the present and the foreseeable future.
But it never hurts to have a good backup.
Right now, the Pats have veteran Josh Dobbs and undrafted rookie Ben Wooldridge behind Maye on the QB depth chart.
A Cleveland Browns writer, Mark Sipos, thinks the Patriots should try to add to that group with a piece of the busy Browns' quarterback competition.
Cleveland currently has four QBs battling: Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders.
And Sipos thinks New England should inquire about a trade for Flacco.
"The Patriots showed interest in Flacco earlier this offseason before he re-signed with Cleveland. Drake Maye has the keys now, but the depth behind him is shaky with Joshua Dobbs and Ben Wooldridge," Sipos wrote. "Flacco would give New England a no-nonsense veteran who can manage the quarterback room, help prep Maye for gameday, and step in if needed without derailing the offense."
Flacco is 40 years old, but he probably would be a solid backup still to Maye. He isn't mobile, though, which is a difference from Dobbs and could matter if Maye gets hurt and another guy has to go in and run an offense originally designed for the mobile Maye.
Cleveland certainly wouldn't mind getting some kind of draft pick back for one of its four QBs rather than having to cut one outright before the season starts.
The Browns might actually want Flacco to start in Week 1, but if he falls out of the lead in the competition, maybe he would indeed be expendable to a team like New England.
