The New England Patriots made some big moves at the start of free agency at many key positions.
The wide receiver unit was the one position group that didn't have the huge addition. The Patriots could make an underrated addition to their team soon
New England is hosting four-time Pro-Bowler and former All-Pro wide receiver Stefon Diggs, according to The Athletic's Chad Graff.
The Patriots are set to return most of their pass-catchers from last season but there is a definitive lack of elite talent or a number one receiver. At 31 years old, Diggs doesn't have much in the tank to be an elite receiver.
What he provides is the reliability to be an open pass-catcher and the veteran leadership to be a solid receiver for second-year quarterback Drake Maye.
From 2018 to 2023, Diggs was one of the most productive receivers in the league. Diggs caught 610 receptions for 7,523 yards and 52 touchdowns during those six seasons.
Diggs was traded from the Buffalo Bills to the Houston Texans before the 2024 NFL Draft in a restructuring process. He was a solid leader for the Texans despite being in the final year of his deal but, unfortunately, suffered a torn ACL in the middle of last season.
Diggs caught 47 receptions for 496 yards and three touchdowns in eight games for Houston.
Diggs could be a big asset in the Patriots’ passing offense, which ranked last in the league last season. The only problem is it is still too early to determine when his timetable to return is. There is a real discussion that he will miss some time early in the 2025 season, but it is something they might accept just by hosting him.
