Kate Chastain Makes a Confession That Leaves Aesha Shocked: “What, Really?!”

Kate Chastain has so many good things in her life, including an adorable, 1-year-old son and thriving friendships. But there is one thing that the Below Deck alum says she does not have: her sense of smell.

Kate appeared on the Below Deck Mediterranean After Show Season 9 with Below Deck Mediterranean cast member, Aesha Scott, where she opened up to her about this shocking revelation. Aesha had been discussing the taste of excrement, which is something she talked about when she first appeared on Below Deck Med Season 4. "It tasted exactly like how you would expect poop to taste like," Aesha said during the Season 9 After Show.

But, Kate revealed to Aesha that she's "never really thought about" its taste before, because she has never smelled it...ever. "I have no sense of smell," Kate told Aesha, as seen in the video above. "I was born without it."

"What, really?!" Aesha replied.

Kate Chastain shares details on having "no sense of smell"
Kate continued, explaining to Aesha that she never realized that she had no sense of smell until she was 14 years old. "Because it's not obvious!" she exclaimed.

"Really?! Oh my gosh!" Aesha replied.

"I don't know, I don't like to talk about it because then [people] are like, 'Can you smell roses? Can you smell poop?' And I was like, 'No, no, no,'" Kate explained.

"Wow!" Aesha replied, before describing the smell of excrement to Kate. But, she noted, "it's hard to explain if you've never smelled anything."

This also means that Kate has never smelled her son, Sullivan Cay's dirty diapers or smelled any of Below Deck alum Chef Ben Robinson's delicious meals that he has cooked over the years. But she is a fan of the taste of them. During an August 2020 episode of Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen: @ Home After Show, Kate noted that Ben's "food is just good."

Kate Chastain says she and Aesha Scott are "open to new experiences"
Although Aesha might be open to tasting things that Kate cannot smell, Kate explained, during the After Show, that this is what makes them "great yachties." "We are open to new experiences, and they might not be great, but we are open to the adventure," Kate exclaimed.

This isn't the first time that Kate has been perplexed by Aesha's candidness during the After Show — especially when it comes to talking about, um, excrement. During Below Deck Med Season 9, Episode 8, Aesha confessed that she likes to take photos of her own excrement to fiancé, Scott "Scotty" Dobson. But this isn't a new experience that Kate is open to.

"Aesha, I love you," she said. "And I love how much Scott loves you, and it's not my thing, but I don't think he's surprised."

"I think every relationship is so different, and you should lean into what works for you," Aesha said about the images.
