Ian Rapoport: ‘Hard to imagine’ Dak Prescott resigning with Dallas Cowboys in free agency

Ian Rapoport: ‘Hard to imagine’ Dak Prescott resigning with Dallas Cowboys in free agencyContract negotiations between Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys are ongoing. Prescott is entering the final year of his current deal and theoretically, could be a free agent by the offseason. Dallas has yet to commit to him as the quarterback in the foreseeable future.

So, what if Prescott does reach free agency? Would he still find a way to resign with the Cowboys? Or potentially test the waters and secure a large contract while joining another Super Bowl contender.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, Prescott would likely be wearing a different uniform in 2025 if he does become a free agent.

“The contract is a big deal,” Rapoport said. “As it stands right now, Dak Prescott heading into the final year of his contract with the kind of leverage that we have rarely seen a quarterback have. the Cowboys cannot trade him, they cannot franchise him. If they don’t do a deal with him, he’s going to be a free agent.

“Will he sign with the Cowboys after they let him be a free agent? I guess anything’s possible but certainly hard to imagine there.”

Rarely would a quarterback of Prescott’s stature be available in free agency. He is fresh off an MVP-caliber season, finishing second for the award. Throwing for 4,516 yards was the second-highest total of his career while the 36 touchdowns were top in the NFL.

You have to imagine multiple teams would be willing to give him a contract Dallas maybe is not. Prescott would have options and despite being with the Cowboys for nearly a decade, Rapoport believes he would move on.

Dallas would then have their own quarterback situation to figure out. Trey Lance is set to be the 2024 backup but his contract is set to expire as well. Would they resign Lance despite not having any serious starting experience since Week 2 of the 2022 season?

Until an extension is agreed upon between Dallas and Prescott, there are going to be a lot of questions regarding the future. How the 2024 season plays out may wind up playing a huge role, particularly with the playoffs — an area the Cowboys have not had a ton of success with Prescott under center.

Training camp begins in Oxnard on July 25 where preparation for that run will begin. Just over two weeks to agree on something before football becomes the main focus.
