Returning Below Deck Down Under yachtie Harry Van Vliet was forced to head to the hospital just days into the Season 3 charter season with a gruesome injury: Cameras showed his bloody hands and part of his right thumb hanging off after a jet ski mishap.
How to Watch
Watch Below Deck Down Under on Mondays at 8/7c and next day on Peacock. Catch up Bravo.
“I was pulling out the jet ski and I clipped the cradle on, and then a wave came and my finger was in between the cradle and the jet ski and it went up, so it was just crushed,” he explained in Episode 3.
Harry spent the night after the injury in “agony,” as he described, and took a boat to the hospital to get an X-ray the next morning.
“What do you think is going to happen with Harry?” stewardess Brianna Duffield asked head chef Tzarina Mace-Ralph in Episode 4.
“I don’t know, but I worry about the season without my boy,” Tzarina responded.
“I mean, I was really looking forward to getting to know him,” Brianna said. (The two crew members had shared a kiss on the first crew night out.) “I just don’t know if that’s even going to be possible.”
Captain Jason Chambers and Brianna both texted Harry while he was away with good luck and good wishes.
Did Harry Van Vliet return to Katina after his jet ski injury?
It was good news for Tzarina and Brianna as Harry soon radioed the crew while he was boating back to motor yacht Katina, joking, “All crew, all crew, I’m back, baby! Did you miss me?”
More good news — Harry shared with bosun Wihan Du Toit, “It’s not broken.”
Still, Harry’s injury put the crew in a bit of a jam for a few days.
“I’m quite relieved,” Wihan said. “But he cannot do diving excursions. He cannot do water sports. This is what a charter is all about. So, we’re in a very, very tough position but we’re going to make it work.”
Chief stewardess Lara Rigby had one idea how Harry could still help, joking, “You can make beds with one hand!”
Harry also told Captain Jason about his injury status.
“Doctor says that these first three days are key,” Harry said. “To not use this hand and not get it wet.”
Jason agreed with Lara that Harry could still be of use.
“Do what you can when you can: Making beds, helping out in the galley. See what you can do out there,” Jason said, then added teasingly, “The more you can do, the less hurry I’ll have to fire you and find someone else.”
How did Harry's love interest Brianna react to his return to Katina?
After getting romantic on the crew night out, Brianna had extra concern for Harry’s well-being, and Harry was excited that she texted him while he was away.
“Well I can’t really be lead deckhand anymore, can I? So, I feel like I’m pushed to the bench,” Harry said in his confessional. “But, I got a text message from someone. ‘I hope you get good news today. Exclamation mark!’ And I said back, ‘Good news from the X-ray and less pain today. Thanks for checking in. X.’ I’m just chucking an x in there, you know? Chuck an x in there. Make the intentions clear.”
Tzarina was also relieved to see Harry again, after the two grew close on a past season of Below Deck.
“I was worried. Don’t ever do that to me again,” Tzarina said in the galley as she hugged Harry. Brianna, who was washing dishes, snuck a few glances at their hug. Was there a hint of jealousy in the air?
Tune in to see if Harry and Brianna’s relationship grows when all-new episodes of Below Deck Down Under air on Bravo Mondays at 8/7c and the next day on Peacock.
