Golden Bachelorette Joan Vassos defends Guy Gansert amid news of past restraining order

Golden Bachelorette Joan Vassos has opened up about the restraining order one of her suitors, ER physician Guy Gansert, had several years ago.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that Gansert's ex-wife filed the protection order in 2021, accusing the Reno, Nevada native of threatening her.

She withdrew the request three years later and it stayed hidden until Guy's participation on The Golden Bachelorette.

'I feel like the Golden franchise is a little bit unique because we come here with a lot of past,' she said.

'We've lived a lot of life and it doesn't completely surprise me that there are...people do things that they're maybe not proud of later on,' she said on Bachelor Nation's Nick Viall's podcast The Viall Files.

She expanded on her thoughts on Guy's past, saying, 'I never saw that side of Guy or of anybody. My interactions with all the guys were pure and lovely and I would have never had any indication that there was any kind of past that he had.

'I feel bad that he had a bad divorce, I did know about that. I knew that it was very difficult and he felt very guilty about breaking up the family because of the kids,' she explained.

'I had no idea what the interactions with his ex-wife were at that time, and so never suspected that there was anything bad.'

Gansert's ex-wife reportedly told the court that the incident occurred as she was leaving a gym with a female friend and getting into her car.

She said that Gansert 'placed something under the rear driver's tire' and picked it back up before verbally laying into her.

Guy tried to clarify things in an Instagram post last week, ahead of the Hometown Dates episode of the reality TV dating competition.

'This was an unfortunate situation that occurred during an incredibly stressful time for me and my former spouse and was ultimately resolved when she voluntarily dismissed her request for a protective order. Together we crafted a resolution that was agreeable to both parties.'

He added, 'My divorce was extremely difficult for me and led me to a very low point in my life and as a result I acted in a way that does not represent who I am. The past few years have caused me to conduct a deep personal evaluation, and I will always continue to work to improve myself.

Guy concluded by thanking his family, The Golden Bachelorette and Bachelor Nation for being 'exceptionally supportive during the most difficult times in my life. I am eternally grateful for them.'

Speaking of Guy's family, on the most recent episode of The Golden Bachelorette, Joan went on hometown dates to Chicago, Reno and Kansas with Guy, Jordan, Pascal and Chock.

Her first visit was to Reno to meet Guy's family. Before the big inquisition by the Gansert clan, they took a ride on his boat on beautiful Lake Tahoe and fans could see Joan assessing the situation in a positive way.

Once they got to his house and she met his people, it was a love fest with Guy's kids and siblings telling her she 'fit right in' with them.

And Guy admitted that his icy post-divorce heart was melting and he'd 'fallen' for her 'big time' and could 'envision time together in the future.'
