He revealed that his intentions are to re sign with the Vegas Golden Knights as he has had two stints with the team and enjoys the product the team has produced.

Smith tenure with the Rangers was short

It may be the structure, it may be the familiarity of the players, but I felt like there's predictability in my game here that helps me play faster. Yeah, I mean I don't have the the exact perfect answer for (why I play better here), I think it's probably a combination of a lot of different things, but I do think it brings a better brand of hockey out of me.

I don't think the last two years have been kind of like the trajectory I wanted my game to go. But coming back here, I felt like I was able to get my footing pretty quickly and feel good about my game again.

Smith only played for the Rangers for 58 games and during that time he scored ten goals with 19 assists for 29 points and was a - 1.
His game dramatically increased when he went back to the golden Knights when he was traded at the Trade Deadline as he played 21 games, scored three goals with eight assists for 11 points it was a + 11.

Rangers unlikely to re-sign Smith for a second stint

The Rangers have turned the page on this season as they have dismissed their former head coach Peter Laviolette and have hired former assistant and Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan.
General manager Chris jury has made it clear that this team will look different next year and will do everything he can to make the team more competitive, aggressive and be defensively responsible.
There are many indications that this team will go through an overhaul and it may take a little time but in the end it will look vastly different and hopefully the Rangers will be back in the playoffs in a short order.
