Ex-Rangers defenseman releases emotional statement regarding his battle with cancer

A Former New York Rangers defenseman released a statement today regarding the status of his health.

Mason Geertsen who was acquired by the New York Rangers off of waivers on March 4th, 2024 had to battle cancer.

He went into treatment right away to go on the attack against the non-Hodgkins Lymphoma in his leg.

He decided to keep the revelation quiet, due to the fact he wanted to persevere with the help of his support system, which included his wife, family, teammates, doctors, and the Golden Knights.

«I chose to keep my diagnosis private and was able to persevere through the worst of it with the support of my wife, family, teammates, doctors, and the Golden Knights organization,» Geertsen said. «Now that I'm on the other side of this journey, I feel it's incredibly important to share my story and encourage everyone to be their own best health advocate.»

Thankfully since the treatment began in 2023-2024, it has gone into remission and continued treatment into this summer.

«I think it's the perfect moment to remind everyone to schedule their annual well checks, get tested, and speak up if something feels off. My cancer was caught during an unrelated doctor's visit, and I'm fortunate that it was. One year later, I'm able to continue pursuing a career as a professional hockey player, while feeling confident in my health, all because we caught it early.

«It's so easy to put off scheduling an appointment but trust me when I say prioritizing your own wellness is something that is worth the time and effort. It has been for me. And to those currently battling, know that you are not in this fight alone. I know what you're going through, I'm here for you, and I support you.»

With Hockey Fights Cancer month taking stage in November, it was the Golden Knights organization themselves that encouraged Geertsen to update fans on his status.

Hockey Fights Cancer Month for players and teams to work together to continue to fight against the disease.

Hockey Fights Cancer was founded in 1998 as a joint initiative between the NHL and NHLPA. This remarkable initiative has raised over $32 million since its inception and been at the forefront of raising awareness and supporting those affected by cancer, touching the lives of millions.
