Dallas Cowboys fans think Mike McCarthy has been fired by Jerry Jones after spotting trend

"Dallas coach is fired" was trending on social media this week - with Cowboys fans believing the team to have fired it's head coach Mike McCarthy.

But it was a false alarm. Instead, it was the WNBA team Dallas Wings who fired their head coach, Latricia Trammell. Despite the Cowboys' disappointing start to the season with a 3-3 record, firing McCarthy would have felt extremely premature - but perhaps not out of the realms of possibility.

The head coach came very close to losing to his this past offseason, with Jones even releasing a statement on why he'd be keeping him in for the 2024 season. After the Cowboys' most recent defeat to the Detroit Lions - giving up over 40 points to an opposition at their home field for the second time this season - Jones has added that he is not thinking about making a coaching change - at this time.

The Cowboys defense has given up 124 points in these three games at the AT&T Stadium - with only the Jacksonville Jaguars (1-5) and Carolina Panthers (1-5) having put on more points against them through the first six games of the year.

And perhaps more worryingly, they have continued to struggle on the offensive side of the ball, in which McCarthy specializes in, with quarterback Dak Prescott struggling mightily to begin the season off the back of making him the most highest-paid player in NFL history.

After extending the likes of Prescott, receiver CeeDee Lamb and cornerback Trevon Diggs to significant deals, Dallas must still allocate a significant chunk of their money on pass-rusher Micah Parsons going forward - meaning they may have a tough time in improving on their team with a lack of resources to do so.

Prescott's contract, in particular, is seen as a huge risk moving forward, with some hoping to see the team attempt to make a move for Shedeur Sanders, the son of former Super Bowl winner in Dallas, Deion. But the quarterback's new deal ties him with the franchise for the next four years, while set to count as much as $89 million of their cap space in 2025 - the highest in NFL history.

McCarthy will need to get the best out of Prescott this season, or he could find himself looking for a new position with the likes of Bill Belichick and Mike Vrabel set to be available to become their next head coach.
