The Valley’s Brittany Cartwright spoke out against RFK Jr.’s recent speech about autism shortly after sharing that her three-year-old son is on the spectrum. The 36-year-old, who’s now divorcing Jax Taylor, also revealed that her bar was “sold without my knowledge,” and she claimed she “never got paid back” for her work at Jax’s bar, Studio City.
Earlier this month, reports surfaced that a deal to open Brit’s Bar was terminated. Around the same time, Jax revealed that he went to rehab for cocaine addiction and alcoholism, but he’s now sober.
On her When Reality Hits podcast, Brittany addressed a speech given by the president’s Health and Human Services Secretary concerning autism. In the speech, RFK Jr. claimed that autism is “preventable,” and he said he’s launching studies to determine how it’s caused by environmental toxins.
Though Brittany said she’s “so grateful that a light is being shined on” this topic, she was unhappy about certain things RFK Jr. said.
“He said that autism destroys families,” shared Brittany, via E! News. “He listed a bunch of things that kids with autism or people on the spectrum in general do not do. And that really upset me because the autism spectrum is so broad.”
In the recent speech, RFK Jr. claimed that some children with autism will “never hold a job, they’ll never play baseball, they’ll never write a poem, they’ll never go out on a date” or “use a toilet unassisted.”
During her podcast, Brittany commented, “But that is not everybody.”
“That just kind of like rubbed me the wrong way a little bit. It kind of made me sad because it’s just such a public platform and misinformation is a big deal,” she continued. Brittany also shared that she’s been in contact with actor Holly Robinson Peete, who has a son with autism, and who also spoke out against RFK Jr.’s comments.
“I really think I can learn a lot from her,” said Brittany. “She’s been going through this for like, 25 years, and she’s been an amazing positive advocate for autism.”
Brittany also shared why she opened up publicly about her son’s journey. “I just felt like it was time to talk about Cruz because with the show coming out and everything, I knew people would see [and] notice that he was still non-verbal and everything … I felt like it was up to me to address it … I really want to be a positive advocate for other families and other people that are going through something like that, because he’s the most beautiful thing in the world.”
At one point in the episode, Brittany shared how Jax’s bar “took a Sharpie” and crossed out her “Memaw’s Beer Cheese” from the menu.
“It’s because I asked them to take it off the menu,” Brittany explained, via @breakingtherulespodclips on Instagram. “I own Memaw’s Beer Cheese. I have it trademarked that I pay for, and everything else. And after Brit’s Bar was sold without my knowledge and everything else that happened with that whole thing — and just like where Jax and I stand right now — I don’t want to be associated with that bar.”
“And I definitely don’t want my Memaw to be associated with it. She’s innocent,” Brittany added. “And I have not made a dollar from that place. And I put in a lot of money [into] that place. And I never got paid back for it. And I’ve never seen a dollar from Memaw’s Beer Cheese or anything. So I was like, I’m done … I will figure out another way to get Memaw’s Beer Cheese to the world.”
According to Brittany, she also asked the establishment to remove a drink named after her: “I just didn’t want to be associated with it, especially with everything that was coming out [about Jax].”
