A player who earned All-Pro honors in 2023 was named a potential cap casualty for the Detroit Lions.
It seems All-Pro honors might not be enough to keep you safe on the Detroit Lions' roster this offseason.
Coming off of a 15-2 season that ended in disappointing fashion, the Lions have some big decisions to make over the next few months.
Some of those decisions center around who they need to let go of to open up cap space.
One player whose name has been brought up to potentially be cut earned themself an All-Pro nod just last season.
Pride of Detroit's John Witicar named Lions special teamer Jalen Reeves-Maybin as a potential cap casualty for the team during the 2025 NFL offseason.
Reeves-Maybin has spent most of his NFL career as a member of the Lions.
Detroit drafted him in the fourth round of the 2017 draft and he spent the following five years as a member of the team, but was only a regular starter for one of those seasons.
He then spent a year with the Houston Texans before they cut him halfway through a two-year contract.
The Lions took advantage of this opportunity and brought him back on a one-year deal. Reeves-Maybin delivered in a big way during that season.
His special teams play earned a spot in the Pro Bowl and on the All-Pro second team.
The Lions rewarded him with a two-year contract worth $7.5 million. That hasn't worked out quite was well. He played in just 10 games in 2024, making 14 tackles and missing a staggering 17.6% of his tackle attempts.
That has the Lions faced with a big decision. Reeves-Maybin carries a cap hit of $4.75 million for the 2025 season according to Spotrac.
The Lions can save $2 million of that by cutting him.
Like with Kalif Raymond, who has also come up as a cut candidate, the question here really becomes how much money you want to spend on special teams players.
In this case, it's a special teams player who isn't coming off of a particularly good year.
Reeves-Maybin is another player who would make plenty of sense to cut if the team decides they can use that $2 million elsewhere, especially with him coming off of a season with regular injury issues and his 30th birthday quickly approaching.
