The Juan Soto sweepstakes is turning out to be a long affair full of twists and drastic turns. New York Yankee fans were disheartened only just yesterday after Danny Abriano of SNYtv posted that Randy Miller mentioned that the Yankees will top out in the $550 million range. It’s a huge number, undoubtedly, but given that other teams are going north of $600, it might not sway Soto in pinstripes.
The New York Mets with Steve Cohen are ready to go big, and hence $550 million is a number that he could topple easily. For the fans, it seemed like déjà vu with the Yankees having missed Yoshinobu Yamamoto to the Los Angeles Dodgers last year after much hope. However, not all hope is lost because, as per Jack Curry of YES Network, a new offer has been made to Soto, which is not just great but could exceed the numbers of Shohei Ohtani too.
Yankees ready for a historic deal with Juan Soto
If reports from Jack Curry are something to go by, it proves that the New York Yankees won’t let Soto move away just so quickly. On Monday, Curry mentioned that the NY Yankees team has had productive conversations with Soto. “The Yankees have had several productive conversations & have exchanged multiple offers. They have been very comfortable with the process & presentation they’ve had with S
Curry mentions that the contract is going to be a mega affair. “I talked to one industry source who said that when Soto eventually signs, he will exceed the deal that Ohtani signed,” mentioned Jack Curry. The LA Dodgers superstar had set a new standard of $700 million, with an annual average value of $46 million, and it’s been the benchmark since.
Now, Juan Soto could command a deal that’s stretched to 12–13 years, which means it raises his contract value to a historic territory. Curry mentions, “When you start to think about what that means in terms of years, it’s a 12-13 year deal; you’re creeping up into the $600 million territory.” Well, it seems like the Yanks are very much still in the game.
Soto sweepstakes nearing its end?
The Juan Soto saga is one of the most exciting stories in baseball this off-season. But the thing is—it won’t last longer. According to Jack Curry, the Yankees expect the negotiations to wrap up in 7 to 10 days. This is also the perfect timing for the front office, which needs to look into other roster needs. Soto’s final decision will set the tone of what’s going to happen at first base and even the rotation.
The fun part for the New York Yankee fans is only just coming. If Soto signs a deal of $700 million over 13-14 years, as Curry mentioned, it also provides clarity of payroll for the team’s future moves. With that in hand, the team could go after first baseman Christian Walker or even Max Fried or Corbin Burnes. Curry mentioned the Yankees will have “leeway” to make these upgrades after hopefully locking Soto in.
Soto in pinstripes and Aaron Judge have created magic this season and can do it yet again in 2025. Now. it remains to be seen if Hal Steinbrenner and Brian Cashman can get this job done; do you think they can? Let us know in the comments.
