TORONTO — The Yankees went to bed Monday night fearing a potential injured list stint for Trent Grisham, so much so that they had Triple-A outfielder Bryan De La Cruz fly north of the border by Tuesday morning.
But Grisham woke up feeling better than expected and then went through pregame activities that offered hope he may be able to avoid the IL.
Before a Canada Day matinee at Rogers Centre, Grisham did some running and agility drills, hit indoors and then took ground balls at first base (as he often does) and fly balls in center field to test out the hamstring even more.
“The strength stuff’s good,” manager Aaron Boone said. “I think he’s even a little surprised how good he feels today. He even feels like, in his mind, albeit a little limited, he could even be a player today. That’s where he’s at, but wants to do some quicker-twitch stuff out there. We’ll continue to evaluate it and see if it’s something we’re going to avoid or wait at least another day. We’ll see.”
In the meantime, De La Cruz arrived as part of the taxi squad and would take Grisham’s roster spot if an IL stint is ultimately needed.

Grisham tweaked his left hamstring in the fourth inning of Monday’s loss while making a running attempt on a sinking liner that fell in front of him.
He said he got his cleat stuck on the turf underneath him and felt “different” than past hamstring injuries he has dealt with.
