According to new report, the Detroit Lions are planning to move on from a player who was named an All-Pro just a year ago in a cap-saving move.
The Detroit Lions have made their first move of the offseason as they decide how they want to shape their roster for a playoff run in 2025.
Despite Spotrac projecting the team to have a healthy $52.69 million in cap space to spend this offseason, there have been a few names that have stood out as potential cap casualties who could open up a bit more wiggle room for them.
Now it seems the Lions have made their first move to try and open up some more cap space.
That move will see them move on from a player who was named an All-Pro just a year ago.
According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Lions are planning to release linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin at the start of the new league year.
Reeves-Maybin has spent most of his NFL career as a member of the Lions since they drafted him in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
He was with the team for his first five seasons and was even a regular starter in his fifth season. He was a part of 82 total tackles that season and forced a pair of fumbles.
Following that success he ended up being signed by the Houston Texans the following offseason, but was released by them after the 2022 season.
That brought him back to the Lions for the best year of his career. In 2023, he was named to the All-Pro Second Team and earned a spot in the Pro Bowl for his play on special teams.
In 2024, he only played in 10 games and registered 14 total tackles.
Now the Lions will be moving on from the former All-Pro in a move that will open up an extra $2 million of cap space to maneuver through free agency this offseason.
