The Las Vegas Raiders will have some tough decisions to make on several key players in free agency in 2025, one of which is safety Tre'Von Moehrig.
A former second-round pick of the Raiders in 2021, Moehrig has developed into a quality starter over the past few years but is also set to hit the free-agent market next year. The Raiders should have interest in bringing him back, but that will depend upon how the market shakes out for him.
One NFL analyst, The 33rd Team's Marcus Mosher, believes that market is going to be robust. He predicts that Moehrig will land a contract that pays him $13 million annually.
"He started every game during the 2021 and 2023 seasons and is on pace to do so again this year," Mosher wrote. "While he isn’t the most dynamic playmaker, he has recorded five interceptions in the last two seasons on top of 2.5 sacks. Moehrig can play either safety position, but he has excelled as a run defender this season. He started the 2024 season off a bit slow, but he has improved each week and could be a surprise winner in free agency next March. Teams love durable safeties who aren’t afraid to tackle. And for the teams that miss out on Baker and Reid in free agency, Moehrig could be a nice consolation prize."
As Mosher points out, Moehrig has been strong against the run once again this year, with the Raiders defender sporting an elite 84.9 run defense grade, per Pro Football Focus.
However, he has seen a decline in his coverage numbers. The TCU product has given up a completion on 88% of the passes thrown his way, and he has surrendered a passer rating of 106.6 when targeted.
Due to that and the fact that the safety market has declined a bit in recent years, we don't envision Moehrig getting a deal worth that much per year. At $13 million per, Moehrig would rank ninth in the NFL among safeties. Granted, Moehrig is a good player, but that seems too rich.
If we had to guess, Moehrig will command a contract that pays him no more than $10 million annually, and chances are it'll come in under that. If he does end up getting as much as Mosher predicts, we wouldn't expect Moehrig back in Las Vegas.
