The Inside Scoop on Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz's Breakup: Insights into the Role of 'Intimacy,' Katie's Reflections on Their Imperfect Marriage, and Past Struggles with Frequent Arguments - lulu

Reasons for Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz Split Revealed as Lack of "Intimacy" Played Role, Plus What Katie Said About Their Imperfect Marriage and Fighting "A Lot" Months Ago

Katie Maloney and Tom Schwartz were reportedly acting more like roommates than a married couple in the months leading up to their split.

According to a series of new reports, the Vanderpump Rules couple was lacking “intimacy” for “quite a while” and weren’t seeing “eye-to-eye” when it came to their thoughts for the future of their marriage ahead of their split announcements on Instagram on Tuesday.

“They act like terrific roommates,” an insider explained to PEOPLE on March 16, noting that Katie and Tom are still “a part of each other’s lives.”

Although Tom hoped for “more flexibility with his life” amid his marriage to Katie, she wanted “more of a traditional marriage.”

“They tried for a long time to make it work but the truth is they’ve been struggling as a couple these past few months,” another source told Us Weekly. They “got into a lot of arguments” before calling it quits.

While the couple committed themselves to ending their marriage “amicably,” as was evident in their statements, a different insider said Katie “really wanted for it to be over.”

“Katie realized how unhappy she is and Tom really wanted it to last between them. He worked really hard to make it work but the issues continued,” the source explained.

“They’re both sad about the breakup. People tend to grow apart after spending years together and that’s what happened,” another insider added.

In addition to the information given by the insiders, Katie herself seemed to shed light on her breakup from Tom weeks ago when she admitted that their marriage wasn’t perfect and said they fight “a lot.”

“Obviously, we are not perfect. We fight a lot,” Katie admitted to Page Six in January. “[But] we don’t try to hide our flaws… We don’t try to hide that we have issues and lie and try to maintain this perfect front.”

At the time, Katie suggested it was her and Tom’s candidness with their Pump Rules audience that was “really helpful” in keeping their relationship intact for so many years.

“When people try to act like they have a perfect relationship, that’s when things can kind of fall apart because it can be exhausting to keep that up,” Katie shared. “We do put it all out there and we’re not ashamed of it … we’re living the truth.”

“We don’t really let opinions of what people think about our relationship or our marriage get in the way because we know what goes on every day between us and that’s what’s most important,” she continued. “We take inventory and stock over here. We know what we have and what’s going on.”

Bravo has not yet confirmed whether or not Vanderpump Rules will return for a 10th season.
