The heartbreaking reason behind Jeff Brazier's shocking rift with Freddy as KATIE HIND reveals the extraordinary measures the TV presenter has taken against his son - suong

Driving along on a tuk tuk on the Maltese island of Gozo, Jeff Brazier grasps his youngest son Freddy's arm as they smile together in the Mediterranean sun. Both appear to enjoy the ride, beaming as though on holiday without a care in the world.

Only that couldn't be further from the truth.

In fact, Freddy was there with his father as he presented a travel segment for ITV daytime programme This Morning. The episode, which aired ten days ago, showed them live from the Mediterranean, with Jeff telling hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard that Freddy was there as his apprentice for a few days.

'Fred's here, we're putting him to work. I'll show you how in a little while,' Jeff said. They then showed drone footage of Freddy helping his dad get the right lighting from behind the camera.

'We'll show you what we're getting Freddy up to, this is like an apprenticeship for him, added the host. 'He's got the reflector right now, doing a wonderful job of keeping me lit.

'Thank you very much for doing that Fred.'

Sources familiar with the Brazier family tell me that Jeff, 45, doesn't want Freddy, 20, out of his sight as Jeff attempts to take legal action to ban his son from having any contact with maternal grandmother, Jackiey Budden - who is, of course, the late Jade Goody's mum.

They also say that Freddy is desperate to speak out about his troubled childhood following Jade's death from cervical cancer in 2009 when he was just three-year-old - adding that Jeff has stopped him from doing so.

Some who know bubbly TV presenter Jeff say that he is anxious that the glossy 'Brazier brand' doesn't get damaged in anyway. Others say he is simply looking out for his son.

Whatever the case, Freddy wants a voice and to talk about family difficulties. In fact, he tried recently to tell what he describes as his 'truth' to a red-top newspaper, but Jeff intervened and did a deal to give the paper his own interview.

The source said: 'Freddy decided that he wanted to speak out; his fractured relationship with Jeff was starting to come out and he wanted to own the narrative.

'He wanted to speak out but it feels like he has been gagged now, like he isn't allowed to speak. It's chaos in the Brazier household, and Freddy just wants to be heard.

'He went so far as to get in touch with a young male journalist at a tabloid via social media and wanted to do some kind of interview but, the next thing, Jeff was alerted to it and he told his side of things rather than Freddy being allowed to.

'Perhaps it's understandable, Jeff obviously and quite rightly will always have Freddy's best interests at heart but he is 20 now, he's an adult and can do what he likes.'

Freddy's tale was never told, and insiders at the media organisation say that Jeff and his wife Kate were instead seen in the newspaper's offices. Just a few days later, a story was published that revealed how Jeff had spoken to lawyers about putting in place an order which would prevent Freddy seeing Jackiey - the closest person he has to a mother following Jade's tragic death.

The article, which Jeff is said to have been behind, also featured a source telling the publication that Freddy's relationship with his grandmother was 'incredibly detrimental to his well-being,' adding: 'The fact that Jeff is going down this route shows how concerned we all are, and how our efforts to keep Fred safe are being grossly undermined by other people.'

Then, last weekend, Jeff did another interview with the same newspaper in which he said how much all of them - he, his eldest son Bobby who is a Strictly and EastEnders star, and Freddy - need their mum.

'To lose the mother of your children is a huge trauma that, of course, shapes your life,' he said. 'It comes down to the fact that we need her. It's not just about missing her - we need her as a mother at the moment, and we always have done, in all honesty.

'I think sometimes it's termed that she is missed and we're doing our best to cope.

'Sometimes, you have no choice but to look at it and realise we need her at this point. I'm enjoying spending time with my son. We are coming together as a family to try to work through a few things at the moment.'

Indeed, there have been issues between Jeff and Freddy for some time but their feud became public last year when Freddy starred alongside his dad on Celebrity Race Across the World.

Their difficult relationship was laid bare for the show's viewers to see. In one shocking scene Jeff, 45, stormed off after Freddy claimed the family did not speak openly to each other and as result he 'keeps quiet'.

Freddy told the cameras: 'Part of me came on this race to open up with my Dad and already he's storming off. That's not good. He might not like what I say, I'm just trying to talk to him really but it's hard.'

A lot of their fall out is connected to Jeff's hatred of Jackiey. They have been at war for several years and are said to have disagreed over an incident which we are unable to reveal. Since the incident happened, Jeff hasn't liked Jackiey seeing Freddy or Bobby.

When the latter starred on Strictly back in 2023, Jeff, who will also be on screens over Easter taking part in the upcoming series of BBC Two's Pilgrimage, wouldn't allow Jackiey to have a place in the audience and instead she had to cheer her beloved grandson on from home.

Meanwhile, Freddy has sought refuge from Jeff's home by going to Jackiey's council flat in Bermondsey, South East London, where Jade grew up. 'Freddy and Jackiey like to sit in Jade's old bedroom and talk about her,' said a friend of Jackiey's.

'Sometimes they even watched Jade's exercise video. Jeff and Freddy have a turbulent relationship, they argue a lot and things can be very difficult so he would escape to Jackiey's often.

'But Freddy knew Jeff didn't like him going to Jackiey's so he wouldn't tell him where he was going.'

Jackiey is the first to admit she isn't exactly the traditional grandmother. She admitted that she smoked crack cocaine while Jade was young and in 2010 a video emerged of her taking cocaine. She also lost the use of her left arm in a motorbike accident. But she adores Bobby and Freddy.

I have been told that there have been times when Jeff has been so keen for Freddy to avoid contact with his grandmother that he has tried to take his phone off him.

'It is all so devastating,' said a friend of all of those involved. 'The boys lost Jade, now they have lost Jackiey because their dad is angry with her.

'When Jade died she was terrified of leaving those two boys; it absolutely broke her heart.'

The idea of a family rupture with her Mum would have broken it again.
