Carl Radke is opening about the financial toll of calling off his engagement to Lindsay Hubbard weeks before their wedding.

During an appearance on The Viall Files, the Summer House star, 40, was asked why he refrained from taking control of the narrative amid the breakup.

"I wrote statements. I had planned podcast interviews that I canceled,” he shared. “I thought a lot about … sharing my side of the story.”

However, the reality star ultimately felt it wasn’t the right moment to speak out, recalling, “It felt, to me, as a male getting a public platform and trying to defend myself, it just didn't feel right, even though I felt like I did what I think you do is right, which is if it's not right to move forward with the wedding, you don't.”

“I didn't wanna be that guy that stood up there and it wasn't right,” he added.

Despite knowing he was moving in the right direction, Radke admitted the decision to break up in September 2023, weeks before their big day, came at a cost.

“The amount of money we invested in all of it. I missed the cancellation for our wedding to get a full refund by seven days,” he claimed. “I wasn’t thinking about canceling anything other than trying to get on the same page with her. Had I been about seven days sooner, I would have saved around $150,000.”

He added: “But, that wasn’t in my brain. I was just trying to land the plane with her.”

Radke noted that he would have benefitted financially had he called off the big day sooner, saying, “Honestly, if I was smart, I would have done it two months prior and saved myself a ton of money and pain and misery.”

In September 2023, Radke shocked fans when he announced they were canceling their wedding and calling off their engagement in a letter to family and friends.

"Words cannot possibly express how difficult the last two weeks have been for Lindsay and I," he wrote in the letter, which was obtained by PEOPLE. "We are so incredibly sorry to all of our guests for the confusion and lack of communication. We were left trying to figure out how this all exactly happened before we could even have the opportunity to determine the path forward amongst ourselves."

"The fact of the matter is Lindsay is devastated and I'm crushed with how all this transpired," he added. "I graciously ask for some patience and grace to heal and recover while we navigate this extremely difficult time."

Since then, Radke admitted on The Viall Files that he has been slow to return to the dating pool and called himself “very single” at the moment. Meanwhile, Hubbard welcomed her first child Gemma Britt Kufe with her boyfriend in December.

Both stars are set to appear on season 9 of Summer House, which premieres later this month.

Summer House season 9 premieres Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 9 p.m. ET on Bravo.
