Secret Cowboys Rumor Predicts Longhorns Coach Steve Sarkisian Hired By Dallas

FRISCO - If an ESPN insider suggests a blockbuster move that seems wildly unlikely but then sugarcoats it by saying his prediction is "reckless'' ... does that make it OK?

That's the game being played in Bristol today as they attempt to figure out what's happening here inside The Star as it relates to Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones' dealings with coach Mike McCarthy.

Mike Greenberg floated out that possibility on Thursday's episode of "Get Up."

We know the Cowboys spent the start of the week meeting with McCarthy on evaluation of the 2024 season. We assume those conversations have now morphed into contract talk, as McCarthy's existing deal ends on Jan. 14.

We also have no evidence that the Cowboys are involved with other candidates, to the point we're unconvinced by reports that Dallas has done "homework'' about possible replacements for McCarthy should this marriage not be re-consummated.

In the end, we don't view this as being as complicated or convoluted as others do.

And we don't see anything conspiratorial about it, either.

But Greenberg has a segment to fill. So he seems to have convinced himself that Jerry is sitting on a secret plot, waiting for coach Steve Sarkisian's season to end. ... and will then steal the Texas coach out of Austin.

The Longhorns will face Ohio State this Friday in the College Football Playoff semifinal here at AT&T Stadium. As it happens, Jones will be in the building.

And so ...

"I'm speculating - recklessly perhaps - that Jerry Jones has someone in mind that he wants to see if he can get. And if he can't get that person, he still wants Mike McCarthy. But what is the big thing that happens between now and Jan. 14?" Greenberg said. "Steve Sarkisian's season might end, and he might get the opportunity to have that conversation before the exclusive window."

He has none.

What is the Longhorns response to this junk?

"We’ve got a game to play," Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte said. "I’m not going to comment. Somebody’s just creating fodder before our biggest game. That’s stupid."
