Ryan Yarbrough’s emergence as a solid starter has helped the Yankees withstand several significant injuries in their starting rotation.
Now, the left-hander has been added to the 15-day IL with a strained right oblique and the rotation will be tested even more.
Yarbrough felt something in the area in each of his last two outings, Aaron Boone said Sunday, after the move was made and the manager added the strain was “low-grade” and the Yankees hope he’s not out too long.
He’ll be able to resume throwing as soon as he’s symptom-free, according to Boone.
Lefty Jayvien Sandridge was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Sunday to take Yarbrough’s roster spot.

Yarbrough, who signed with the Yankees after opting out of his minor league deal with the Blue Jays in March, was set to start Monday in Cincinnati.
That start will now go to Allan Winans, who spent time on the major league roster in April, but didn’t appear in a game.
The 29-year-old right-hander has pitched well at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, where he has a 0.90 ERA in 11 appearances, nine starts.
“He’s been tremendous,’’ Boone said of Winans. “To be this deep in the season as a starting pitcher with a sub 1.00 [ERA], we’re really excited. Hopefully he brings that up with him [Monday].”
Yarbrough provided unexpected stabilization to the rotation in the wake of injuries to Gerrit Cole and Luis Gil, as well as Marcus Stroman.
Since joining the rotation in early May, Yarbrough limited teams to no more than two runs in all but one of his eight starts.

Stroman has been on a rehab assignment after being sidelined with left knee inflammation and is due to pitch again Tuesday, with his pitch count up to around 70.
Following that outing, Boone said the right-hander would be “in the mix” to potentially join the rotation.
The Yankees also have JT Brubaker on the roster. The righty appeared in his first MLB game on Saturday since 2022, having undergone Tommy John surgery followed by setbacks that included an oblique injury last season and fractured ribs this spring.
Boone said Brubaker, 31, will continue to serve as the team’s long man, but since he was built up to over 70 pitches while at SWB, could also be a consideration to start should the need arise.
Even with the injuries, the Yankees rotation has been solid, with contributions from high-priced Max Fried and Carlos Rodón, but also rookie Will Warren, as well as Clarke Schmidt, who tossed seven no-hit innings on Saturday and hasn’t allowed a run in 25 ⅓ consecutive innings.
