Kevin O’Connell said that the Minnesota Vikings would likely have to bring in another defensive back given the recent injuries to Mekhi Blackmon and Shaq Griffin, and they’re apparently bringing in a player who has a pretty extensive resume.

Adam Schefter of ESPN is reporting that the Vikings are bringing in veteran defensive back Bobby McCain.

McCain came into the NFL in 2015, when the Miami Dolphins selected him in the fifth round of the NFL Draft out of Memphis. He played with the Dolphins through the 2020 season which, yes, means that he has a direct connection to Brian Flores, who coached the Dolphins from 2019 to 2021. After being released by the Dolphins, he signed with the Washington Football Team in May of 2021 and played the 2021 and 2022 seasons in the nation’s capital.

Last season, McCain played for the New York Giants. Well, he didn’t play much, appearing in ten games with no starts and recording just two combined tackles and one pass defended. He did play half of the Giants’ special teams snaps this past season but played just 19 total snaps on defense.

In his career, the 30-year-old McCain has appeared in 131 games with 87 starts. He started 32 out of 34 games in the two years he played with Washington, so I’m not entirely sure what caused the drop-off he had with the Giants. He has experience at safety and cornerback, including at slot corner, so his versatility might have been something the Vikings found attractive while they were looking at players to potentially bring in.

Welcome to Minnesota, Bobby McCain!
