A familiar face in reality television is in Chicago to share her story of her battle with breast cancer.
Guerdy Abrara joined the cast of the Bravo show “Real Housewives of Miami" in season four.
Abrara was diagnosed a year ago with breast cancer. She decided to let cameras follow her journey of surgery, radiation, chemo, and she even let them film her shaving her head.
She was surprised by the reaction she got.
“I just couldn't believe how many people said, ‘I was never thinking about getting it because it doesn't run in my family and everything. But when I saw your story, I'm like, oh my gosh, let me go get checked. If she can get sick, I can get sick,’” Abara said.
She said sharing her battle with the world changed her life in more ways than one.
“My job is to try to, you know, really be, a champion of early detection. It's just, it was in my being to want to do it and in some weird way I feel like God literally picked me to do it.“
Abrara said she receives messages from women and their families every day thanking her for decision to share her cancer journey.
She's in Chicago for the Lynn Sage Foundation gala. The foundation has raised 50 million dollars for breast cancer research and education since 1985.
