New York Rangers forward Matt Rempe has taken a unique approach to his offseason preparation. Rempe, who will enter his sophomore season with the Rangers next fall, revealed a few personal details about how he's getting ready for his second year in the NHL.
Rempe told Remy Mastey of The Hockey News that he has been living with legendary goaltender and fellow Rangers player Jonathan Quick in Connecticut.
The 21-year-old enforcer shared that he has been training alongside Quick and Rangers veteran forward Chris Kreider, aiming to elevate his game as he prepares for the upcoming season after becoming an overnight rookie sensation in 2023-24.
Rempe, who spent most of his summer training in New York, returned home to Calgary for a month before moving in with Quick about a month ago.
“I went back home to Calgary for a month, stayed with the family, my mom,” Rempe said at Fanatics Fest, via Mastey. “It was great to be home for a little bit, but then I came back out to Connecticut and moved in with Jonathan Quick and his family.”
Quick, a two-time Stanley Cup champion, has been an invaluable mentor for Rempe during this time.
“They have been unbelievable,” Rempe said of Quick and Kreider. “Him and Kreider have taken me under their wing. Been training with them out in Connecticut. It’s been going really well.”
Rempe joined the Rangers' NHL squad midway through last season and quickly caught the attention of fans with his physical style of play and willingness to fight, entering bouts with a few veteran players.
However, the young forward understands the pressures that come with the spotlight and he feels like he still has a lot of room to improve.
“I’m getting all this attention, and I feel like I have to earn it,” Rempe told NHL.com. “I’ve done well, but there’s so much room for growth. I don’t want to let anyone down. I’m terrified of that. That pushes me every single day to try to do the max that I can and ask how much better did I get today?”
Despite showing flashes of toughness that endeared him to Rangers fans, Rempe’s limited ice time and stats—1 goal and 1 assist in 17 regular-season games—indicate that he has more work to do to earn the trust of head coach Peter Laviolette and build himself a long-term future in the NHL.
