After trading for Geno Smith, the Las Vegas Raiders’ plan should be to surround him with talent.
On paper, the Raiders are still a below-average team, and having a decent quarterback doesn't change that. Adding Smith was a step in the right direction, but for a Raiders team that's looking to win much sooner than later, they aren't in the best position.
Frankly, a wide receiver might be more important than adding to the offensive line, but there's an argument for either side.
Either way, there are options for the Raiders to pursue, including Will Hernandez, a starting guard from the Arizona Cardinals.
Hernandez has dealt with some injuries throughout his career, which could be said for most of the players still available. Still, after being drafted in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft by the New York Giants, he's been a decent player at the NFL level.
Not the best, but again, the Raiders likely won't find that at this stage of the offseason.
Bill Barnwell of ESPN likes the fit for the Raiders, adding that he could be a potential bargain on this market if he remains on the field.
"...and if he's healthy after the injury, his acquisition could be a bargain given what even average guards are making on the open market. As a free agent who would qualify for a compensatory pick, teams might be waiting to sign him after June 1, when his medical status should be clearer and he won't count against his new team's compensatory formula," Barnwell wrote.
Signing players who are often injured isn't typically ideal. However, outside of 2022 and 2024, Hernandez has stayed on the field for most of his career. If it's a short-term deal, signing the 29-year-old could be a wise decision.
