With his NFL franchise, named by Forbes as the 12th most valuable sports team in the world, heading to its second Super Bowl in three years, Lurie’s name was mentioned by HBO and The Ringer’s Bill Simmons as a potential buyer in the upcoming sale of the Boston Celtics.

Here’s what Simmons said on his podcast on Sunday, after the Eagles downed the Washington Commanders, 55-23, in the NFC Championship Game:

The Celtics, it was their first round of buyers, they had to cut down their prospective buyers. Four or five people made the first round. One of the people was the Eagles owner, Jeffrey Lurie, who is apparently from Massachusetts. There’s been a couple of ‘Hm, I wonder who these guys are?’ There are a couple I couldn’t figure out but that’s one.

According to Shams Charania, an insider for ESPN, the Celtics are projected to be the most expensive sale in NBA history, surpassing $6 billion. They’re loaded with star talent — and monster salaries — coming off of last year’s 2023-24 championship, the 18th banner in franchise history.

Lurie was born in Boston and grew up a Celtics fan. He received all of his education in Massachusetts, including a master's degree in psychology at Boston University, and a doctorate in social policy at Brandeis. Forbes estimates Lurie’s net worth at $5.3 billion.

Wyc Grousbeck, the Celtics’ majority owner since 2002, plans to remain the team’s governor until 2028, which is when the sale is anticipated to be completed. That leaves plenty of time for Lurie to capture another Super Bowl or two, before potentially purchasing one of the NBA’s most historic franchises.
