This week, the NHL announced its salary cap ceiling numbers for the next three seasons. And the news is terrific for Colorado Avalanche fans who want to see the Avs add more high-end talent in the coming years.
Indeed, with the cap ceiling rising in a major way -- from its current level of $88-million to $95.5-million next year, then to $104-million in 2026-27, and then to $113.5-million in 2027-28 -- the Avalanche are going to have a lot of money to augment their roster.
Even with the considerable jump in cap space next season, the Avs are still going to be tight to the cap ceiling. Right now, they've got $87.3-million in cap space taken up for next season, so it will be a challenge to add marquee talents to the roster. That's likely a key reason why star right winger Mikko Rantanen was traded last week. But with superstars Nathan MacKinnon and Cale Makar both signed at least through the 2026-27 campaign, the Avalanche are going to be able to give both Makar and MacKinnon major raises when they're due for new deals, and then add top talent around them after that.
It will take a little bit of patience for Avs fans to see all the benefits of the cap ceiling surge, but relatively soon, Colorado GM Chris MacFarland is going to pounce on UFAs and trade targets to make this team considerably better.
