The New York Rangers have already begun their retooling of the lineup in the midst of the NHL regular season. While it hasn't led to any major success, free agent Brock Boeser is one player GM Chris Drury could look to bolster the lineup with in July.![Canucks F Brock Boeser returns to ice Tuesday at Boston | Reuters]()
With the New York Rangers slated to have a plethora of salary cap space to weaponize during free agency, they should look to bolster their top-six with an elite forward.
That forward would be the Vancouver Canucks own Brock Boeser who is a pending UFA.. His $6.6 million AAV contract expires at the end of the 2024-2025 season, and he has acknowledged recently that his time in Vancouver may be at an end.
"Honestly, it's unlikely at this point," Boeser said when asked about a return to Vancouver next season. "«It sucks, it's unfortunate. I'm just trying to play good hockey, and then I'll worry about everything after that. We all know it's been a roller coaster of a year. There's been a lot of different things.»
The 28-year-old winger could reunite with J.T. Miller in New York and give the Rangers another capable weapon in their arsenal in a hopeful return to the playoffs in 2025-2026.
The Canucks have fell out of contention and could look to reshape the lineup around Elias Pettersson, as they have already made a major trade with New York before to give him the top billing in Vancouver.
Now with Boeser's potential $8 million AAV contract ask, the Rangers would have to open up their wallets for a 70+ point winger.
For offense like that, they should be so thankful if they can ink him to a deal in July, as the Rangers' top stars have failed to perform up to expectations this season.
Boeser could be a useful tool in the lineup for a team that needs refreshing, and Miller's arrival was the start.
While there have been reports by Elliotte Friedman of the Rangers being interested in other superstar forwards, like Mitch Marner, Boeser seems the more likely option if Marner would re-up in Toronto.
In 72 games with the Canucks, he's scored 25 goals, and 49 points.
