NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman has revealed that the New York Rangers will «move mountains» to acquire Mikko Rantanen once free agency approaches if the Carolina Hurricanes can't secure him.
Over the next 10 days, many NHL organizations will be figuring where they stand with the pending unrestricted free agents, obviously including the New York Rangers.
According to several reports there has been that have indicated if the Hurricanes don't reach an agreement with Rantanen before the March 7th trade deadline, they could look to flip him in another massive trade. But once July 1st comes around he will be fair game for any organization.
Given the massive contract that he'll be able to command, upwards of a $14 million AAV, there has been talks about rebuilding teams like the Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks trying to secure him to a deal considering all the cap space they have.
However, while Elliotte Friedman was speaking on NHL Network Radio, he names two massive teams that he believes will do anything to sign Rantanen regardless of their cap situation. One team being the New York Rangers.
«Teams will make room for this guy. If they have a feeling that he's going to come to them, the NY Rangers, Toronto, it won't just be the teams with a lot of cap room. It'll be teams (saying) like, 'OK if I have to move a mountain to get Mikko Rantanen we're going to try to do it.»
The Rangers have been making massive moves all season, as it started with trading their captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks, and then acquiring J.T. Miller from the Canucks for Filip Chytil.
So it's likely that they will move more notable names from their roster to make a deal like this to happen, but only time will truly tell what GM Chris Drury will do.
