The Pittsburgh Penguins could go full rebuild if what we found on "X" from Roger Hicks NHL Insider remains to be true. In what could be considered speculative until confirmed as true, the Rangers are one of the teams interested in talent from the Penguins, including forward Rickard Rakell.![Rickard Rakell]()
According Roger Hicks "NHL Insider" on Sunday, the Pittsburgh Penguins and Kyle Dubas are working the trade market.
In an unconfirmed report, they're currently fielding calls on Erik Karlsson, Kris Letang, and Rickard Rakell.
Which, if you do think logically, Mike Sullivan would want to bring some of the most talented guys from Pittsburgh over to New York. It might be an upgrade for some spots in the lineup, including the top six.
With Rakell's 70-point season in 2024-25 being a high point for the former Duck, Kyle Dubas could net some nice assets in return for him.
While Kris Letang, who is no longer in his prime, along with Erik Karlsson, might be nice depth additions, but could be more costly in the long run.
If the Penguins end up going down this road, it could turn out to be a point where the team will be torn down and built back up from the foundations.
In recent years, we've seen the Calgary Flames, San Jose Sharks, and Chicago Blackhawks all undergo rebuilds.
While the Detroit Red Wings rebuild has gone on for half a decade.
If this turns out to be true, Chris Drury might have to give up significant capital for a player like Karlsson, as salary would have to be retained, and Letang just isn't the same player he used to be.
The Rangers only have $777K In available cap space, and getting older isn't exactly the greatest idea since the Penguins dynasty is long dead, and its core players, aside from Sidney Crosby, are past their prime.
For now, this is some interesting speculation, but we need more information before it can be confirmed.
