The New York Rangers are desperately trying to improve their lineup. The last move GM Chris Drury tried to send Mika Zibanejad to the Vancouver Canucks idealistically, getting a return of JT Miller.
A mere $500K difference in salary between the two players, but that's not the whole story.
The Canucks, want younger talent, and while GM Chris Drury can't wait to find a way to pry JT Miller from Vancouver, GM Patrik Allvin has other plans.
He wanted to improve the Canucks blueline, which has been busted up with Filip Hronek out long-term. The team's depth is lacking, as Noah Juulsen is one of the regular Canucks defensemen along with Tyler Myers.
They could find a use for Rangers defenseman Braden Schneider easily enough though.
But GM Chris Drury wasn't ready to part ways, with him.
Schneider has a lot of qualities that the Canucks like, as a cost-controlled defenseman with a $2.2 Million salary cap hit. He eats minutes as his usual TOI is 17:09 and leads the Rangers with blocked shots, 67, and hits 71.
If you're a GM like Drury who is attempting to land a superstar like JT Miller who could improve the team significantly, wouldn't you open the chest just a little bit further to see what you can afford to lose?
Especially if you're hunting for a Stanley Cup.
Regardless, the tit-for-tat style of deals isn't sustainable and this seems like another case of both teams meeting in the middle.
The Rangers will be without JT Miller, and packaging Mika with Schneider might make the medicine go down a little bit better.
