New York Rangers are reportedly set to sign top NCAA goaltender to Entry-Level Contract

According to Elliotte Friedman of the 32 Thoughts Podcast, The New York Rangers are set to sign 21-year-old goaltender Calum Tung who is currently playing for University of Connecticut in the NCAA.UConn goalie Callum Tung #NCAA #huskies #rangers

Tung happens to be in his freshman year, and he has decided to leave the University to join the New York Rangers organization in the very near future.

Tung will join Rangers Hartford Wolf Pack in the coming days

Tung is an undrafted netminder, but his name jumped onto NHL teams' radars thanks to a great season at the University of Connecticut. Though he split the season with Florida Panthers prospect Tyler Muszelik throughout the season, Hockey East Coach of the Year Mike Cavanaugh tabbed Tung to be the starting goaltender as the team made its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Tung with his Huskies teammates try to get themselves to the Frozen Four and unfortunately came up short after being beaten by Matt DiMarsisco of Penn State where UConn lost 3-2 in overtime.

Tung will bolster Rangers needed goalie depth

As the wave of NCAA players begins to sign with NHL teams, the Rangers are certainly in need of goaltender depth as they had signed Igor Shesterkin to a long-term contract but have a backup in Jonathan Quick who was in the twilight of his career.
At 39 years old, Quick has seen a dramatic drop in his numbers compared to last season where he had 2.62 goals against, and a save percentage of .911. This season, through 22 games he holds a record of 10-6-2 with a goal against of 3.03 and a save percentage of .898.
Bringing Tung into the organization is a smart move by general manager Chris Drury as the Rangers do not need to trade any draft picks or any prospects to acquire this talent and could prove valuable as the team continues to bolster its depth.
Tung was a very under-the-radar prospect prior to college. However, a solid 2023-24 campaign with the Alberni Valley Bulldogs of the BCHL led to him finding a spot on a D-I roster. With the Bulldogs, Tung went 22-14-1 with a 2.80 GAA, a .917 SV% and three shutouts. Tyler Kuehl

The Rangers, meanwhile, are in a battle for their playoff lives as they have eight games remaining in their schedule and will be at home on April 2nd to face the Minnesota Wild. Game time will be 7:00 PM eastern.
