New York Rangers former first-overall draft pick is facing some major backlash from fans after making a disgusting gesture during the American Anthem on Thursday night.Alexis Lafreniere with the Rangers

This season, New York Rangers former first-overall draft pick Alexis Lafreniere has been trending for all the wrong seasons, but mainly due to his poor performance this year.
As this season, Lafreniere only has a total of 38 points (15 G, 23 A) throughout 70 games played, compared to last season when he posted a career high of 57 points (28 G, 29 A) in 82 games played.
However, on Thursday night when the New York Rangers faced off against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the 23-year old Canadian forward sparked more controversy following an unusual gesture during the American anthem, and fans are calling him out for it.

Alexis Lafreniere facing serious backlash from fans after disrespecting the American Anthem

During Thursday nights game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, Alexis Lafreniere refused to take off his helmet during the American National Anthem, while being on home ice at Madison Square Garden, New York, United States.
It's likely due to the fact of recent political issues surrounding USA and Canada, but to blatantly disrespect the American Anthem while being on an American team is just disgusting behaviour, and fans are letting him know exactly how they feel about this.
Certainly not a good look for the young star, and hopefully this doesn't affect any of his own teammates who are from the United States. However, everyone is entitled to their own choices and perspectives on the political issues between the two nations.
Do you think Alexis Lafreniere was intentionally looking to cause controversy with this gesture? Let us know in the poll down below.
