Meet New Deckhand Nicolas Cattelan, Who Is Already Causing a Stir: "This Could Get Me Fired"

After problems with the deck crew reached new heights on Season 3 of Below Deck Down Under, Captain Jason Chambers was forced to make changes, and bosun Wihan Du Toit and deckhand Johnny Arvanitis were let go in Episode 11. But the Katina crew wasn’t down two members for long, as new bosun, Nate Salmon, and new deckhand, Nicolas Cattelan, both joined before the next charter.

Nicolas immediately got attention from the ladies, with chief stew Lara Rigby pointing out to stew Marina Marcondes de Barros (after her love triangle drama with Wihan and Tzarina Mace-Ralph), “Maybe there’s somebody for you!”

However, by the end of the first night of the charter, Nicolas' behavior had stew Brianna Duffield asking producers, “What the f—k?”

Who is new Below Deck Down Under deckhand Nicolas Cattelan?

The 24-year-old deckhand joined Katina with only six months of experience, but Captain Jason wasn’t worried.

“Nick’s pretty green, but, Nate’s got 7 year’s experience,” Jason said. “And I think we’ll be pretty well covered on deck.”

However, the fact that Katina is the largest-ever vessel used in the Below Deck franchise was a bit daunting to Nicolas.

“I actually got into yachting pretty recently. Katina is by far the biggest boat I’ve ever worked on. Super complicated layout. Almost like the Starship Enterprise,” he shared, making a reference to the fictional ship in the Star Trek series.

Nicolas also shared a bit about his childhood.

“Believe it or not in high school I actually wasn’t very popular,” he said in his confessional during the April 14 episode. “I was always a nerd about all sorts of things. Movies. Science. Being here makes me feel like I’m part of the Starship Enterprise crew. I feel like I’m discovering strange new worlds, and new cultures and planets and boldly going where no one has gone before.”

In his free time on the boat, Nicolas shared in his official BravoTV.com bio that he likes to listen to classical music or film soundtracks.

“Free time is precious on the yacht," he noted. "It must be effortless and truly relaxing,"

His favorite off-boat activities include hiking, and visiting museums and historical sights. He added that he misses his mother most from home while he travels.

Why new Below Deck Down Under deckhand Nicolas Cattelan is afraid of getting "fired"
Nicolas’ first charter was with a group of women from Dubai—and it got him flustered.

“Around beautiful women, I try not to think about it,” he said in his confessional. “The more I think about it, the more awkward it gets. I mean, they remind me a lot of the girls who didn’t want to talk to me in high school.”

So when the guests asked Nicolas about his background, he happily obliged with tales of his hometowns of Toulouse, France and Cape Town, South Africa.

“I’m actually French,” he told the guests. “But my mom has this accent so I stole it from her. [She’s] English. Half English, half Chinese.”

As the guests were playing beer pong, one of the ladies told Nicolas if she got the shot, she was getting him a shot. When she sunk it, she ordered a shot of tequila from Bri—which Nicolas then downed, to Bri's surprise.

“We can’t drink on charter,” Bri whispered to him at the first opportunity.

“Oh, God, I can’t believe I just did that,” Nic said in his confessional. “Captain Jason runs a dry boat. This could get me fired. That was so stupid.”

After telling Bri he’ll confess about the shot to Captain Jason, he adds, “It is what it is. I learned my lesson,” leaving his fate on the boat up in air.

Don’t miss how Captain Jason got involved in Lara and Wihan’s feud and threatened to send someone home, leading up to the new hires.
