The perfect defenseman for the New York Rangers has just emerged following an announcement made by the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have recently acquired defenseman Matt Benning in a trade with the San Jose Sharks for Timothy Liljegren.
Just a few days after the Maple Leafs acquired Matt Benning, rumours started to speculate that the Leafs were looking to move on from Benning as they have no need for him, and now that's exactly what leafs are planning on doing.
However, the Leafs are not trading Benning, instead they have placed him on waivers Monday afternoon, making him available for any team to acquire him if they wish.
It's no secret that Matt Benning has not had a lot of success in the NHL, but he has played over 400 NHL games in his career, and he could be a solid, and cheap depth option for a lot of teams.
In 464 career games with the Sharks, Edmonton Oilers, and Nashville Predators, Benning has 17 goals and 85 assists.
Especially the New York Rangers who desperately need a change on their defensive end, along with adding a player with grit and toughness.
Along with other waiver news, forward Andreas Athanasiou of the Chicago Blackhawks and goalie Kaapo Kähkönen of the Colorado Avalanche were both placed on waivers as well.
