MARRIED At First Sight Australia viewers slammed Adrian as a 'hypocrite' after he made a shock infidelity confession - just moments after he confronted his wife about hers.
Fans were left stunned when Adrian Araouzou, 30, called out his wife, Awhina Rutene, also 30, for cheating in a past relationship, only for producers to reveal that he had done the same.
The tense exchange unfolded during the show's Confessions Week, where couples build trust by sharing personal secrets.
Awhina admitted to having been unfaithful in a previous relationship, a confession that triggered a strong reaction from Adrian.
He argued, "There's no excuses when it comes to cheating," making it clear that he was disappointed in Awhina’s actions.
However, the situation took a turn when producers reminded Adrian that he had disclosed his own history of infidelity in his show application.
Adrian clarified that his past indiscretion occurred when he was around 20 or 21 years old, approximately a decade ago.
He stated that he and his then-partner were "on a break" at the time, implying a distinction between his actions and Awhina's past behavior.
This revelation did not sit well with viewers, though, who rushed to X, formerly Twitter, as the installment aired on E4.
One tweeted, "Ah, Adrian is a hypocrite yet wouldn’t let Awhina talk."
Another commented, "I think that's a 'yes, I've also cheated' from the extremely arrogant and gormless Adrian."
Someone else said, "Awhina says she's cheated on a past partner and he says its unforgivable & then we find out he has basically done the same."
A third agreed: "So basically Adrian has cheated but he’s using semantics as an excuse (also thank god they added subtitles!)."
And a final chimed in with, "Ah Adrian using the 'we were on a break'."
Things only got worse when Adrian refused to participate in writing a confession letter, a move that left Awhina disappointed.
He explained his reluctance by stating he wasn't ready to open up about the darker moments in his life.
As the episode progressed, tensions escalated between the couple, leading to a heated argument that culminated in Adrian leaving the experiment.
He left his wedding ring on the counter and informed Awhina of his departure via text message.
While taking part in the series, Awhina learned Adrian had faced domestic violence charges in the past.
Adrian faced three charges - assault occasioning actual bodily harm, domestic violence common assault and resisting police - but he was found not guilty on all counts.
All three charges were dismissed in a court in November 2021.
