Jared Goff better watch his back.
As the Lions destroyed the Cowboys on Sunday in Dallas, the seven-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback-turned-Fox broadcaster couldn’t stop raving about the road team’s offense, expressing he would have a ball with Detroit.
“I would love to be [the] quarterback of this offense,” Brady told play-by-play caller Kevin Burkhardt, who originally asked him how much fun he would have had playing in this offense.
“Again, there’s a lot of variety to choose from. … So when I look at this offense, it reminds me of what great offense should be in the NFL. This is a great blueprint, they’re under center a lot. A lot of it’s play-action pass, a lot of it’s deception, so, it really slows that defense down, and you see the benefits of it.”
Brady, 47, was enthralled by the play-calling from Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, raving about the team’s play designs, schemes, etc., as Detroit rolled passed the Cowboys, 47-9.
Brady — who officially retired from the game in 2023 after 23 seasons — could hardly contain his excitement over the Lions’ flea flicker that went from running back David Montgomery to wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and then to Goff, who hit tight end Sam LaPorta for the touchdown.
“If you’re not having fun watching that, you don’t have a heartbeat,” Brady exclaimed on the broadcast.
Goff threw for 315 yards and two touchdowns on 72 percent completions as the Lions improved to 4-1.
Although Brady has since settled into his role as an NFL analyst, one team pondered the idea of him playing under center in 2023.
With 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy working his way back from an injury sustained in the 2023 NFC Championship game, head coach Kyle Shanahan flirted with the idea of bringing in Brady to help run the offense.
“As we talked, I’m looking at Brock, and he’s got his arm in a sling, and I really am not sure I’ve got a quarterback who’s going to be ready for the start of the 2023 season. That started all of this,” Shanahan said at the time, according to the “Football Morning in America” column.
Purdy eventually led the 49ers to a Super Bowl berth in February 2024, when they fell to the Chiefs.
