Chicago law firm Edelson PC wants Erika Jayne to stop selling her designer duds as they attempt to recover the $2 million she and estranged husband Thomas Girardi are accused of embezzling from families of victims of a 2018 plane crash.
On Friday, December 18, the firm told a federal judge that the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star “must stop selling her clothes” and requested an order of contempt be placed against her.According to a report from the Chicago Sun Times, Edelson PC asked for the contempt order after noticing that Erika had promoted her designer clothing for sale on Twitter after Thomas’ assets were frozen. As they explained, the RHOBH cast member shared a link to a company called Vestiaire Collective, who were seemingly helping her unload tens of thousands of dollars worth of clothing from designers, including Chanel, Versace, and Gucci.
“While Edelson is unaware of the exact relationship between Vestiaire Collective and Erika Girardi, Erika Girardi may be attempting to move Tom Girardi’s assets outside the United State by selling them through a French company,” Jay Edelson wrote in a court document.
On Monday, U.S. District Judge Thomas Durkin froze the assets of Thomas and his firm after they were found to be in civil contempt amid the $2 million case against him. He then told the attorney that the “simple way to cure all of this” would be to pay at least four of his former clients the money they are owed, which is $500,000 each.
Because Thomas claims to be unable to make the payments, the judge referred the case to the U.S. Attorney’s office and from there, prosecutors requested the judge to give them access to the sealed documents, which they did.
“These are widows and orphans,” Judge Durkin said earlier this week. “Half a million dollars for any one of these families is a significant amount of money. Life-changing, given the tragedy they went through.”
