Katie Maloney shared the real reason she quit Vanderpump Rules, and hinted at when “everything went crazy.” She also suggested that she sees her ex-husband Tom Schwartz less and less, and the dogs they once shared “primarily live with him.”
After their divorce, Katie and Tom filmed season 11 as they navigated sharing custody of the pets. During the season, Katie feuded with almost everyone in the cast except Ariana Madix, amid the aftermath of her ex Tom Sandoval’s affair.
Speaking on the “Humble Brag” podcast, Katie addressed where she stands with Schwartz.
“We’re cool, but we don’t go get lunch,” said Katie, via @vanderpodrecaps on Instagram. “We still have dogs, and they primarily live with him.”
Katie shared that she saw Tom more often when they were filming.
“[I also saw him because of] the dogs. Because we share custody, a week on, week off. It was really intense,” she said. “Filming the show post-divorce was a really strange place to be … [Before that] we had to live together for five months because our house was getting repaired before we could sell it. And so that was interesting. But we got along the whole time. It was very amicable, very peaceful. But then, of course, when we started filming, everything went crazy.”
“It became hard to even do that. That’s … why this past year, after our last season, I was like, I’m not coming back to the show,” she said. “And now they’ve recast the whole thing.”
Another factor, according to Katie, was that she’s only friends with “one person” in the cast. “I just was like, I’m friends with one person. I really can’t stand the rest of them,” she shared.
She continued, “And even though Tom and I are cool, I don’t want to keep up with my ex-husband, go on vacation.”
At one point, Katie addressed Bravo’s choice to replace the whole cast with new stars for season 12.
“Rebooting it with an entire new cast — it was a little shocking because like they could barely bring new people into our seasons in the past year,” she said. “Now you’re just going to scrap everybody.”
“The reboots feels a little strange,” she added. “Because I’m like, why don’t you just call it something else? Just do a new show. Why are you doing a season 12 of a show that’s not a season 12?”
