Jerry Jones reacts to Troy Aikman’s scathing criticism of Dallas Cowboys

Jerry JonesJerry Jones spoke out on what Troy Aikman had to say about the Dallas Cowboys wide receivers. While appearing on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas on Tuesday, the Cowboys owners said Aikman is “professional” and “fair” regarding his criticism.

“Troy knows football. He lives it. … Troy’s credible. And should be. … He’s very professional,” Jerry Jones said per Jon Machota of The Athletic. “I think he’s very fair. … I’m pretty confident that we’ve got the ability to coach and we got some receivers that take the coaching and can improve. And that’s the big thing, improve.”

Last week, Troy Aikman appeared on 96.7 The Ticket in Dallas and said the Cowboys wide receivers need to improve in a big way. “I think the routes are terrible. I think they run terrible routes. And I’ve thought that beyond this year,” Aikman said, per Machota.

“I think CeeDee (Lamb) has got to improve in his route running. As a quarterback, if you’re not certain where guys are going to be consistently, it’s hard to play the position. That’s what I see. I see guys lazy coming off the line of scrimmage. Sometimes they run, usually if they do, it’s because they’re anticipating they’re going to get the football on that play, but if they’re not, they don’t. And it all ties together. I’m not impressed with that part of it.”

Aikman added: “I just finished watching the Baltimore Ravens because I have them this week. You put on film of theirs and watch their receivers run routes and they come off the football, so does San Francisco’s and Green Bay’s and others. But it’s hard to play the (QB) position if you’re not certain how guys are going to run routes or where they’re going to be. And I’m not speaking for Dak (Prescott). Dak may say, ‘Hey, I think (their routes) are amazing.’ But as a former quarterback watching it, it’s gotta get a lot better.”

The Cowboys are currently 3-3 and have yet to win a home game this year. Lamb has been the Cowboys’ top receiver this year, catching 32 passes for 467 yards and two touchdowns. He’s coming off a 2023 season where he tallied 135 receptions for 1,749 yards and 12 touchdowns in 17 games.
