The Dallas Cowboys snapped a five-game winning streak on Sunday with a commanding win over the Washington Commanders. The Cowboys came through in the fourth quarter putting up twenty-four points to take home their fourth win of the season.
The Cowboys have been haunted by many issues since the offseason. After a slow start to the season, a streak contrasting to their last three seasons, there were rumors that there were internal conflicts in the team. Amid the weak performances, comments from players like Micah Parsons led to media speculation about head coach Mike McCarthy’s relationship with the locker room. The addendum of both also sparked some speculations about McCarthy’s future contract possibilities with the Texan team.
Earlier, owner and general manager Jerry Jones had come in defense of the coach post the Parsons’ comment. Now, after the victory, Jones reestablished the media about his opinion on the coach. He defended the coach, highlighting his achievements in the professional league. McCarthy and the Green Bay Packers defeated the Pittsburgh Steelers at the Cowboys Stadium in 2011 to win the Super Bowl XLV.
On a Monday appearance on the 105.3 The Fan, Jones went a step further by not ruling out a possible contract extension for Mike McCarthy in Dallas.
According to The New York Times, the Cowboys have just a 1% chance of making the playoffs this season. To secure a spot, they must win all six of their remaining games. Nevertheless, it would still not be enough. The Cowboys would still have to cling to the other teams’ results considering they could close out with a 10-7 record.
Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman backs Jerry Jones’ statement with his analysis
Dallas Cowboys legend Troy Aikman supported Mike McCarthy staying on as head coach despite the challenges of the 2024/25 NFL season. The Cowboys despite enjoying a relatively regular season in the last few years haven’t tasted much of the postseason glory.
Amid commentating on the Baltimore Ravens and Los Angeles Chargers game, Aikman made a statement heaping some praise on the ex-Packers head coach
You’ve heard me say it before, but Mike McCarthy is a hell of a football coach.
In his four seasons excluding 2024-25, McCarthy led the Cowboys to the postseason in three of them. However, they are 1-3 in the postseason, not going past the Divisional Playoffs. In fact, they haven’t progressed beyond the Divisional playoffs stage since the championship year in 1995. The postseason dissatisfaction was one of the leading reasons, which has shifted considering McCarthy and the Cowboys have a dismal start so far.
In recent days, there have been increasing calls by fans to replace Mike McCarthy. The fans have lost hope in the coaching and want fresh options to lead them into final glory. Colorado Buffaloes coach Deion Sanders and ex-New England Patriots six-time winning coach Bill Belichick are leading names sought by the fans and media to replace McCarthy at Dallas. Dan Quinn is also a leading prospect according to some fans including Skip Bayless.
