The Las Vegas Raiders were quite busy over the offseason. Heading into the 2025 campaign, they have a handful of new faces leading the way, with Geno Smith taking over at quarterback, star running back Ashton Jeanty being selected with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and Pete Carroll getting hired as the new head coach.
And yet, the front office is still making moves, as they recently signed veteran safety Terrell Edmunds to come in and shore up their secondary. After waiting all offseason to find a new home, Edmunds leapt at the opportunity to sign with the Raiders, and he recently explained why he decided to join their team.
Terrell Edmunds Excited to Get to Work with the Raiders
Edmunds broke into the league with the Pittsburgh Steelers as the No. 28 overall pick of the 2018 NFL Draft. He immediately earned one of the team’s starting safety roles, and he ended up playing a key role in their secondary for five seasons before he ended up departing from the team in free agency after the 2022 campaign.
Since then, Edmunds has struggled to find a new home, as he’s spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles, Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Los Angeles Chargers, while also briefly returning to the Steelers last season. It took a while for Edmunds to generate interest in free agency this offseason, but Las Vegas eventually came knocking at his door.
Edmunds is expected to fill a depth role in the Raiders’ secondary, as Jeremy Chinn and Isaiah Pola-Mao are penciled in as the team’s starting safety duo. And while Edmunds may face longer odds to stick around on Las Vegas’ 53-man roster, he is excited to hit the ground running with his new squad now that he is in town.
“My first thoughts when the opportunity presented itself, I was just excited,” Edmunds said when speaking with reporters on Tuesday. “Excited to come and join a new team, excited to come and join these guys. I saw how much they were grinding. I watched the (preseason) game before I even came out here.”
Terrell Edmunds Faces Long Odds to Make Raiders 53-Man Roster

Anytime a player joins a team later on in training camp, it’s going to be tough for them to carve out a roster spot for themselves. That’s the situation Edmunds finds himself in, even though he has a wealth of starting experience throughout the course of his career. The Raiders already have a decent amount of depth at safety, which means Edmunds is going to have to find a way to stand out quickly if he wants to make the team.
The best bet for Edmunds is landing with their practice squad as an emergency option should injuries hit at the safety position. It’s likely not the role he’s looking for, but given the inconsistent tape he’s put together over the past two seasons, it would be an opportunity for him to build himself back up. Regardless of his potential role, Edmunds is thrilled to be with the Raiders, and it will be worth seeing if he can make a late push for a roster spot.
